I met John 11 years ago when he was kind enough to host a friend and I in Ireland as we made our way traveling around Europe.  I greatly enjoyed his sarcasm and humor and we kept in touch visiting each other wherever we both moved.  We hadn’t seen each other in person in a while but we kept in contact and I had been hearing about “Frenchy” for quite some time and finally had the pleasure of meeting Delphine last year when I visited Dublin and spent a glorious banter-filled weekend with the two of them.  I remember thinking they were perfect for each other and I was happy they found each other.

I arrived in Ireland Thursday and spent the evening with the two of them.  They were kind enough to arrange my way over to Doolin with their friend Gerry.  Their wedding day was over in a blur.  I started off with Delphine getting ready with her mum, sister, and nieces.  Everyone in the room was easy to photograph as they were relaxed and cheerful.  Her nieces were quite inquisitive and their curiosity provided fantastic moments.  I quickly ran up to meet my friend and took some photos of the groom getting ready as well as a few family photos.

Their lovely humanist ceremony was starting and over before we knew it with some heartfelt and humorous moments shared by all.  We had been discussing what to as far as weather the past few days and since the sun was out after the ceremony we decided to seize the opportunity.  Their friend Javed (and now mine) kindly drove us to various locations around Doolin.  It was blustery to say the least for the couples photos but extreme weather can make for dramatic photos if the couple is up for braving the cold and these two certainly were.

Part 2 of Jessi & Eric’s wedding

I met Jessi many years ago when she first moved to Bozeman for university.  I had known of her for a few years prior because I had previously been adopted into her cousin’s family and had already become good friends with her sister Sarah (See Sarah’s wedding here).   Jessi is a delightful person who I liked immediately.  She has a grasp on what’s important and doesn’t sweat the small things always keeping life in perspective.  I didn’t realize it until I was told the story at the wedding but I was there the evening that Eric first showed interest in Jessi.  Unfortunately for both, I sabotaged that evening for them and they would have to wait.  Jessi didn’t know it but I had given myself the responsibility of being her older cousin/brother and decided the night was over, thus I bear-hugged picked up Jessi from the couch (where Eric was sitting and talking to her) and carried her to the car and drove all of us home.  I soon moved away from Bozeman and didn’t see Eric again for 5 years.  Hearing this story after I had just photographed their wedding was hilarious for me and I was delighted Eric’s persistence paid off.

Part 1 of Jessi & Eric’s wedding

I was really excited to take their wedding photos because I knew they would have a laid back and fun-loving group of family and friends at their wedding.  The day itself started with a group effort by friends and family helping set up.  I really enjoy the collective spirit of Montana weddings, everyone always pitches in to get done whatever needs to be done.  The wedding took place at the beautiful Homestake Lodge which resides on the continental divide just outside of Butte, Montana.  Soon Jessi was getting ready in the cabin with her family and her BFF Carl.  Jessi, Carl, and I go back some years and I have wonderful memories with them in NYC as well as some stylish nails in Boston celebrating St. Patty’s day.  The cabin vibe was fun and happy and Oats, the nieces, and nephew were providing lots of moments to photograph.  Before I knew it everyone was ready and Jessi & Eric did their reveal.  Soon after the wedding started and finished in a short and endearing ceremony where none of the many children in attendance had time to get bored.  Afterward, we took group photos and everyone had a bit of time to relax.  The couple is supremely admired and loved by their family and friends which was displayed during the heartfelt speeches.  Dinner was served and after they finished their mains we stole them away for photos/video just as the light was getting good.  The sunset was brilliant which I always hope for and rarely get.  The happy couple was easy to photograph as they were simply enjoying each other’s company.  After the photos, the couple cut the cake and cut a rug with their guests.  They danced into the night until they had to shut it down.  Thank you for letting me be a part of  your special day!

part 2 of Emily & Andy’s wedding

part 2 of Emily & Andy’s wedding

Andy was my first friend and when moved to York in the fall of 2011. He was also my first flatmate and a fantastic one at that and we moved to the next flat together as well. He eventually moved to Leeds for work and I eventually moved back to Edinburgh but we’ve stayed in touch over the years even as I’ve floated around. On a trip back to Edinburgh over New Years I was fortunate that Andy & Emily were also visiting and that’s when I met her for the first time. I was delighted Andy had found such a caring, funny and lovely person.

Fast forward to August 9th and the big day. I’m always delighted to photograph friends weddings because you get to spend more time with them as the photographer than the other guests and this always makes me feel a bit special. I started with a few photos of Andy getting ready and they were relaxed and having a good time. I must say Andy I’ve always enjoyed Andy’s banter and it was great catching up with him whilst finishing getting ready and we had some good laughs as a result.

I headed over to Emily and she was absolutely full of joy. Emily was perhaps the happiest bride I’ve encountered and it really makes my job much easier as well as simply being uplifting to be around. She was in her dress and ready to go and I was able to get a couple of bridal portraits and a few moments with her dad before heading over to the Baltic Contemporary Art Gallery.
